as if any of "this" is "natural"

at my sister's birthday party yesterday, my stepfather was talking about how so many people have a vitamin D deficiency because they don't spend any time outdoors. he had a statistic for how much of the time people on average spend outside, and it was terribly low.
i found it telling that he was focused once again on how badly people operate, as if it was their fault that they weren't able to spend more time outside. as if capitalism isn't the reason that so many folks are stuck inside doing the kind of labor that was never meant to last for 8 hours.
studies have shown that the human brain should only perform work for a few hours maximum each day. physical labor--well, we all know how much exercise is necessary to remain healthy (not thin--healthy). it isn't 8 hours or more a day. that's way excessive. nothing about the way that we live is designed to support what our bodies really need. not our work schedules, not our foods, not our technology. so let's not pretend that the culprit is people watching too much TV or choosing to spend so much time indoors--let's talk about how unhealthy capitalism is and has been for most of us since it's application in the united states began.
and that's all i have to say about that.
